1. The Invisible Crisis Behind Every Restaurant's Back Door

Every single day across the globe, an astonishing paradox takes place:

Over 1.3 billion tonnes of fresh, edible food is discarded into municipal landfills.
When this organic matter decomposes without oxygen, it generates massive amounts of methane gas, contributing to 8–10% of all global greenhouse gas emissions.
Simultaneously, more than 800 million human beings face chronic hunger, not knowing where their next meal will come from.

In major cities, this tragedy plays out every evening. Banquet halls conclude grand wedding receptions with trays of untouched basmati rice, dal makhani, and warm breads. Hotel buffets and corporate cafeterias prepare for hundreds of guests and end their shifts with dozens of fresh portions left over.

Meanwhile, just three kilometers down the road, an orphanage, an old-age shelter, or a community soup kitchen is struggling to balance its grocery budget.

"The tragedy of food insecurity in modern cities is not a shortage of food — it is a breakdown in logistics and communication."

2. Why Traditional Food Donation Fails

To understand why good food ends up in garbage dumpsters, our team analyzed why restaurants do not simply donate their leftovers. We identified four core bottlenecks:

The Clock is Ticking (Extreme Perishability): Cooked meals have a strict safety window of 3 to 5 hours. In traditional setups, a restaurant manager has to manually dial phone numbers or post in informal WhatsApp groups. By the time someone replies, finds a driver, and navigates city traffic, the food has often turned sour.
The "Who is Nearby?" Blindspot: A busy restaurant manager rarely knows which local shelter currently has active volunteers, empty refrigerators, or hungry residents waiting for a meal.
Trust and Misuse Concerns: Without an authentication process, businesses worry that unknown individuals might claim free food and resell it commercially or handle it unsafely, exposing the donor to legal and reputational risks.
Lack of Automated Safety Safeguards: Bulletin boards and basic social media posts have no concept of time expiration. A listing posted at 1:00 PM remains visible at 8:00 PM, creating a dangerous risk of food poisoning.

3. Introducing ShareBite: The Instant Bridge

ShareBite is a full-stack, cloud-ready web application engineered to solve these friction points in real time. It serves three distinct user groups:

👨‍🍳 The Food Donor (Restaurants, Caterers, Bakeries): Can log in, click "Use My GPS", specify meal quantity (servings, kilograms, or boxes), choose dietary tags (Veg or Non-Veg), set an exact safe-by expiry time, and broadcast the surplus to nearby rescuers in under 30 seconds.
🧑‍🤝‍🧑 The Claimer (NGOs, Shelters, Community Kitchens): Can open a live radar map, view all active unexpired food batches within a 2 km to 50 km radius, reserve a batch with a single click, and receive turn-by-turn driving directions directly to the venue.
🛡️ The Administrator (Municipalities & Institutions): Can review incoming partner credentials, verify authentic charitable organizations, and monitor aggregate social metrics in real time.

4. The Live Geospatial Engine: How the Map Works

At the heart of ShareBite is an interactive geospatial engine built using React 19, Leaflet, and OpenStreetMap:

ShareBite Interactive Live Geospatial Map Dashboard

ShareBite Interactive Live Geospatial Map Dashboard

Key Capabilities of the Live Map:

Dynamic Multi-Color Radar Pins:
- 🔵 Pulsing Blue Radar Pin: Marks the user's exact live GPS coordinates with an animated glowing wave.
- 🟠 Orange Markers: Represent available, unexpired surplus food batches.
- 🔵 Blue Markers: Identify nearby verified NGOs, community kitchens, and charities.
- 🟢 Emerald Markers: Highlight registered participating food donor restaurants.
Proximity Radius Filtering: Users can toggle between 2 km, 5 km, 10 km, 15 km, 25 km, and 50 km radius bands. The backend calculates geodesic distances on the fly using the Haversine Formula: Distance=2Rarcsin⁡(sin⁡2(Δlat2)+cos⁡(lat1)cos⁡(lat2)sin⁡2(Δlon2))\text{Distance} = 2R \arcsin \left( \sqrt{\sin^2\left(\frac{\Delta\text{lat}}{2}\right) + \cos(\text{lat}_1)\cos(\text{lat}_2)\sin^2\left(\frac{\Delta\text{lon}}{2}\right)} \right)Distance=2Rarcsin(sin2(2Δlat)+cos(lat1)cos(lat2)sin2(2Δlon)) (where R=6,371 kmR = 6,371\text{ km}R=6,371 km represents Earth's mean radius).
Turn-by-Turn Driving Navigation: Once a volunteer claims a batch, the map draws an active dashed green navigation polyline using the OSRM (Open Source Routing Machine) engine, displaying the exact road distance in kilometers and estimated arrival time in minutes.

5. Three Game-Changing Architectural Features

Feature 1: Live OpenStreetMap Overpass Radar

Most civic apps face a "cold start" problem: if local charities haven't downloaded the app yet, the map is empty. ShareBite circumvents this through real-time queries to the OpenStreetMap Overpass API.

Whenever a user opens the app, the backend scans public geographic tags for amenity=social_facility, office=ngo, office=charity, and social_facility=soup_kitchen within the specified radius. A smart 5-second AbortController guarantees that if external servers lag, the system seamlessly displays local database records without freezing the UI.

Feature 2: The Two-Party 6-Digit OTP Handover Protocol

To guarantee that food reaches authentic beneficiaries and protect donors from rogue pickups, ShareBite implements a cryptographic verification flow:

ShareBite Secure 6-Digit OTP Verification and Impact Certificate

ShareBite Secure 6-Digit OTP Verification and Impact Certificate

Claim Initiation: When an NGO clicks "Claim Food", the server generates a cryptographically random 6-digit numeric OTP (e.g., 582 914) visible exclusively on the volunteer's phone.
Physical Collection: The volunteer travels to the donor's kitchen and presents the 6-digit code.
Atomic Verification: The restaurant donor types the OTP into their dashboard dialog. The backend atomically matches the code, invalidates it immediately (otp = NULL), and transitions the listing to picked_up.

Feature 3: The 60-Second Food Safety Sweeper

To guarantee that vulnerable populations never receive compromised food, ShareBite enforces an automated background cron daemon powered by node-cron:

Every 60 seconds (* * * * *), the daemon queries the database:
```
sql
```
UPDATE listings
SET status = 'expired', expired_at = NOW()
WHERE status IN ('pending', 'claimed') AND expires_at < NOW();
Any food past its safe consumption deadline is instantly revoked from the discovery map, preventing volunteers from making unnecessary trips for spoiled meals.

6. Dual-Mode Database: Zero Downtime Reliability

A project built for critical community relief cannot afford server crashes. ShareBite features an innovative Dual-Engine Persistence Layer:

Production Mode (PostgreSQL 16): Uses a robust connection pool (pg.Pool) with automated table migrations and foreign key constraints across users, listings, ngos, and donors.
Zero-Config Fallback Mode (In-Memory Store): If PostgreSQL is offline, the backend catches the connection timeout within 5000 ms, automatically activates usePostgres = false, and switches to a built-in in-memory repository pre-seeded with verified test data. The app never crashes during live demonstrations, field outages, or low-connectivity scenarios.

7. Measuring Real Societal and Environmental Impact

Donating food is not just a moral imperative—it is also a key component of corporate Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) compliance. ShareBite translates every rescue into measurable data:

Quantifying Meals Rescued:
Total Rescued Mass (kg)=(Servings×0.40 kg)+(Boxes×2.50 kg)+Direct kg\text{Total Rescued Mass (kg)} = (\text{Servings} \times 0.40\text{ kg}) + (\text{Boxes} \times 2.50\text{ kg}) + \text{Direct kg}Total Rescued Mass (kg)=(Servings×0.40 kg)+(Boxes×2.50 kg)+Direct kg
Quantifying Carbon Abatement:
Carbon Offset (kg CO2e)=Total Rescued Mass (kg)×2.50 kg CO2e / kg\text{Carbon Offset (kg CO}_2\text{e)} = \text{Total Rescued Mass (kg)} \times 2.50\text{ kg CO}_2\text{e / kg}Carbon Offset (kg CO2e)=Total Rescued Mass (kg)×2.50 kg CO2e / kg
Instant Digital Impact Certificates: Upon verified pickup, the donor unlocks a formatted, printable certificate documenting meals saved, carbon prevented, and official verification stamps for company records and social recognition.

8. What Lies Ahead: The Roadmap for ShareBite

While our current implementation is fully functional and ready for deployment, our engineering roadmap includes:

🤖 AI-Driven Surplus Forecasting: Utilizing LSTM machine learning models to help restaurants forecast surplus food based on day of the week, weather patterns, and local holiday trends.
📦 IoT Cold-Chain Telemetry: Integrating low-cost Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) temperature loggers inside transport containers to monitor unbroken cold-chain compliance during transit.
🚐 Multi-Stop Route Optimization: Implementing Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem (CVRP) algorithms to enable single NGO rescue vans to collect food from three or four donors along an optimal driving path.

9. Conclusion

Technology is at its finest when it solves genuine, everyday human struggles. ShareBite demonstrates how modern open-source web frameworks, real-time spatial telemetry, and cryptographic verification can combine to eliminate food waste, protect public health, and feed those in need.

By turning waste into warm meals in under 12 minutes, ShareBite proves that with the right digital infrastructure, no edible meal needs to be lost, and no neighbor needs to go hungry.
